Tuesday, January 31, 2023 West Lafayette Red Devils versus Western Boone Stars Boys Score: Red Devils 102, Stars 77 In the regular-season finale, the Red Devils Boys traveled to Western Boone for a quick dual with the Stars, and the good momentum continued forward for the Devils. Overall, the Red Devils won the competition, and several athletes stepped-up with exciting performances just a couple weeks from the boys championships season. Senior Abrahim Kayali joined in on his first competition of the season and helped the 200 Medley Relay team of Landon VanMatre, Lucas Arnaldo, Ray Li, and Abrahim to secure the victory in the event. Jacob Cohen added a successful swim to the team tally as he dropped 6 seconds in the 200 Freestyle. Then, Jacob Clampitt-Morales and Ryan Miloudi added to the excitement of the night with 20+ second drops in their best times for the 500 Freestyle. Landon VanMatre nearly swam into the WLHS record books with a 00:52.52 time in the 100 Backstroke; his time was 2 one-hundredths of a second off the School Record, but the performance grabbed the attention of everyone at the pool. And for this brief competition with a short timeline, Seniors Ryan Knipp and Braylon VanMatre requested to swim the IronMan line-up which features the anchor leg of the 200 Freestyle Relay, 100 Backstroke, 100 Breaststroke, and the lead-off leg of the 400 Freestyle Relay. All 4 of those swims were performed within about 10 minutes of real time! The boys are showing some great swims for this time of year, and the next few weeks will be an exciting one for the group. Individual event winners versus the Stars were: · Ray Li – 200 Freestyle, 100 Butterfly · Lucas Arnaldo – 200 Individual Medley, 500 Freestyle · Brendan Twomey – Diving 6 · Landon VanMatre – 100 Freestyle, 100 Backstroke · Ryan Knipp – 100 Breaststroke Next Up for the Red Devils: Boys Sectional Prelims on Thursday, February 16 and Finals Saturday, February 18; both at Zionsville High School
