Red Devils finish runner up in the WCJC Tournament

West Lafayette brought their best defensive intensity of the season against Faith in the Semi Final of the WCJC Tournament. The first half highlights included seven points from Max Smosna and three rebounds each from Alan Salazar and Michael Gulich. The Red Devils carried a lead through the third quarter but gave it up late in the fourth quarter by a point. With amazing poise, Mason Wright stepped to the free throw line and sunk two critical free throws, the last of which proved to be the differential in the game. The final was 28-27 for a West Side victory and trip to the finals. Chase Ostrom and Smosna each had two assists. Wright swiped four steals and Salazar added three. Gulich was the leading scorer with eight. This was the teams' fifth win in a row and brought their season record to 8-8. The Red Devils faced off against Benton Central in the finals and fell behind 11-1 after the first quarter. West Side chipped away the rest of the game but ultimately the cold start could not be overcome. The final score was 35-29 in favor of the Bison. Michael Gulich scored six fourth quarter points and pulled in nine total rebounds. Defensively, Max Smosna and Mason Wright each had three steals and Wright led all scorers with 12. West Lafayette finishes the season with a 8-9 record. Season Leaders: Wright with 159 points and 38 steals. Gulich with 59 rebounds. Season Highlight: Spirited, team victory against Faith in the WCJC Semifinals.
