7th Graders Putting the Volley in Volleyball

By Allison White | Sep 14, 2023 8:28 AM

The 7th graders came out to volley last night against Wea Ridge. Wea Ridge had a some goods hits against West Lafayette, but the Red Devils were passing up their hits and serves with determination. Coach White said after the game, "This is the best volleyball I've seen my girls play all year." One spectator mentioned that he could see the girls learning throughout the game. Although the A team ended up losing in the end, they were working on hitting strategic spots on the court, communicating to one another, and figuring out a new rotation. Due to sickness on the team, Stella Smosna fearlessly took on the roll of the team's second setter. She did amazingly, and as a result of her and Kayleigh Withers' work, the team saw many hits last night from Raegan Miller and Maddie Klinge in the middle front. Coach White was also proud of Ava Hollingsworth for going in whenever and wherever needed to be aggressive and to not let the ball hit the court. Juliana Martinez saw her first A team minutes last night due to her amazing serves in the B team games up to date. Finally, Olivia Lucas and Sophia Rickert saw more time on the court last night and Coach White has happy to see their passing, hitting, and other contributions to the overall improvement of the team as well. In the B team game, the Red Devils won in two sets, which included a nail-biting ended of the second set. Coach White in particularly noticed Gia Mitrione's improvement in ball control within the court. Daphne Goldberg led the team in digs with six, and Emily Boaz followed with four. Juliana Martinez led the team with eleven aces. Goldberg also led the team with three kills. Addy Weiner was consistent on the serving line last night, which the coaches love to see. Coach White is pleased with the improvement of the team and is hopeful that by time the WCJC tournament comes around, the Red Devils will be ready to take on any competition.
