The girls XC team opened the 2019 IHSAA tournament with a collection of exceptional races to win the program’s 10th consecutive Sectional.
Sophomore Alli Steffey bested the field to earn her first individual Sectional title in a near-PR 18:53. Junior Haley Mansfield cut 20 seconds off of her previous personal best to finish in 19:05 alongside senior standout Caroline Jordan. The pair finished second and third overall. Sophomore Annabel Prokopy was fourth overall in a 15-second PR of 19:28. Junior Amelia Simpson (6th overall) was the fifth and final Red Devil to score. She also recorded a 12-second PR.
Senior Ellie Haq raced to a ninth place finish and a well-deserved 40-second PR of 19:53. Junior Abby Serra was the final Red Devil in 15th overall and a 10-second PR of 20:52. All seven earned All-Sectional honors by finishing in the top 20.
The girls are back in action next Saturday at the Benton Central Regional (new location). The boys race is at 10:30 a.m. and the girls race will follow. The top 5 teams from the Regional will advance to the following week’s New Prairie Semistate.
