The boys avenged their Sectional runner-up finish with a narrow victory in this morning’s IHSAA Regional. The trio of freshman Albert Rajwa, senior Andre Hazbun, and sophomore Jacob Wright fought hard on the final stretch to give the team a two-point win.
Junior Henry Balagtas tied his previous personal best (16:34) to finish third place overall. In his first race in the month of October, sophomore Elijah Stenberg ran well to place fourth in 16:46.
Freshman Albert Rajwa set a new personal best (17:08.8) to earn tenth overall, three spots better than his finish in last week’s Sectional. He was the top freshman in both the Sectional and Regional races. Senior Andre Hazbun ran tough to take 14th overall in 17:20. Hazbun overtook the #4 runner from Harrison on the final stretch. Junior Jacob Wright set a new personal best (17:30.4) to finish 19th. Wright passed at least three runners within the last 200m to secure the team victory and All-Regional honors individually. The top five Red Devils (Balagtas, Stenberg, Rajwa, Hazbun, and Wright) earned All-Regional honors by finishing in the top 20.
Freshman Jackson Fry was the top sixth runner in the race, placing 23rd in 17:36. Sophomore Yian Koh finished 48th.
The boys advance to next week’s New Prairie Semistate. There, the top six teams will earn the opportunity to compete at the IHSAA State Finals on 10/31.
