West Lafayette baseball won two of three games, defeating North Montgomery 15-2 (five innings) on April 26 and Benton Central 14-7 on April 28, both at Bob Friend Field. Sandwiched in between was a tough 10-9 loss at Benton Central.
Junior Corey Adams batted .700 for the week, going 7-for-10 with two doubles, a triple, seven RBI and four runs scored. He had three hits against North Montgomery and in the first game against Benton Central.
Five of Adams’ RBI came against North Montgomery, and the Red Devils also got a pair of RBI each from seniors Colin Martin and Sam Schott and junior Nate Brown. Freshman Andrew von Werder pitched a complete game, surrendering just four hits and one earned run with two strikeouts.
In the win over Benton Central, the Red Devils trailed 7-6 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning before erupting for eight runs. Brown and classmate Andrew Fredette both had two hits and two RBI, while sophomore Evan Cooke had a pair of hits and senior Matthew Schroder delivered a key two-run single. Martin allowed one run with four strikeouts over the final 2.1 innings.
Cooke struck out 12 batters in 5.2 innings pitched at Benton Central, while senior Joey Siciliano drove in two runs.
For the season, Siciliano continues to top the team with a .459 batting average, followed by Adams (.325) and Fredette (.312). Siciliano, Martin and Schott rank 1-2-3 in RBI with 19, 14 and 11, respectively.
The Red Devils wrap up Hoosier Conference West Division play with two games against Rensselaer, Monday on the road and Tuesday at home. West Lafayette travels to Northwestern on Friday.
