West Lafayette and Lafayette Jeff renewed a century old rivalry last Friday night at Gordon Straley Field. The two teams had not met since 1953 and a 33-0 Jeff win. An estimated 3,000 fans packed into Gordon Straley to see this opening game of the 2018 season. Big performances by Sage Hood, Kyle Adams, and Kyle Hazell propelled the offense. The defense held the Jeff offense in check with several big plays by George Karlaftis, Nelson Mbongo, Tavion Woodard, Justin Vasili, and Yanni Karlaftis. A back and forth first half was what the fans came to see. Jeff held a slight advantage at the half after late 1st half TD’s by Spencer Blankman and Sage Hood to pull the Red Devils within one point at 22-21. In the second half Jeff struck first scoring early on a 30 yard pass play to take a 29-21 lead. After that it was all RDP. About 2 minutes later Sage Hood filled in at QB for the injured Kyle Adams, and on 3rd and 1 from the 7 yard line, barreled in over two Jeff defenders to narrow the lead to 1 point. With around 9 minutes left in the 4th quarter, Kicker Caleb Krockover booted a career long 37 yard FG to take the lead for good. The Red Devils never looked back. Late in the 4th, QB Kyle Adams returned, and on 3rd down with 5 minutes remaining he scrambled from the pocket and scored a 12 yard rushing TD. RDP made the extra point and hung on for a 9 point win against their cross town rival.
The Red Devils return to action this Friday against the 5A McCutcheon Mavericks at Ellison Stadium. Kick-off is at 7:00P.
